Description

Brian Rush McDonald became a Jesus freak in 1970s Alabama and then immersed himself in the dogma of Christian fundamentalism at Bob Jones University. Despite anxiety about unsaved souls facing eternal damnation, he became a minister, married his high school sweetheart, and became a father to three children. He took his family to Taiwan where he became a missionary, experienced a different culture, learned Mandarin and broadened his life outlook. They returned to America and McDonald became a pastor for Chinese American churches while he pursued a Ph.D. from The College of William & Mary. After 30 years of preaching, McDonald walked away from the pulpit to pursue a different path. The Long Surrender is a riveting memoir about losing religion to find freedom.

Lovely and engaging read. I felt so close to this journey to discover the authentic self, which can be difficult in the face of either dogma or cultural expectations. Mr. McDonald persevered. I so enjoyed reading his personal story, shared with a gentle thoughtfulness and deep caring.

In The Long Surrender, McDonald’s stories were heartfelt and honest, but not without humor. There were several times when I literally laughed out loud while reading. Some of the struggles he had with fundamentalism were also what I had struggled with in college and later as an adult. And it’s just so nice to have someone put these feelings into words and lay them out in the form of a man’s journey.

I really appreciate the candor in this book. It brings many deep thoughts to mind and also validates many of my own beliefs. The path from a fundamentalist background to a full realization of his own beliefs is a good read. You will enjoy this story.

Brian’s struggles were very relatable to me, though I can only guess at how hard it must have been to walk away from the ministry. But it made me remember my own questions and think about where they led me. I read it much faster than usual for me, and I’m still thinking about it weeks later!

I appreciated the patient storytelling and the chance to see how the author’s perspective on faith changed over the years. As someone unfamiliar with Christian fundamentalism, it was fascinating to me to see it from the perspective of someone living it every day. What a good read!
