There is still a lot to be learned, but much of what has been discovered remains in scholarly journals inaccessible to many parents. This book provides basic, up-to-date information about brain development that is concise, easy to read and full of helpful advice to parents who want to raise positive, happy children.

What is so great is that she explains so you can actually understand how it all works.

As someone who has both a bachelor’s degree in neuroscience and who has worked with a variety of children in the public-school system, I was impressed by how well the book broke down complex topics into a more accessible form without sacrificing the quality of the content conveyed. I can think of many a parent, teacher, and paraeducator who would greatly benefit from reading this book in order to better help them understand the children they care for, and maybe even themselves. I will definitely keep this book in mind to recommend to parents and teachers alike as I work with them in the future.

This incredibly readable book will be helpful for all parents. Let’s be honest. All children have issues with behavior at one time or another, and all parents (or grandparents, or teachers, or concerned adults) wish they could understand what is going on and know how best to respond, to help the child grow. Dr. Reisetter explains the current scientific evidence describing links between behavior and brain chemistry in a way that ordinary folks can understand. She then goes on to provide clear examples of ways we can help children learn and thrive at home and at school. I’m going to buy a copy of this book for my adult children who have children of their own, and also as gifts to all the new parents I know and love.

Getting To Know Your Child’s Brain was just what I needed! Dr. Reisetter explains in great detail how the chemicals in your child’s brain can impact their behavior and emotions. What is so great is that she explains so you can actually understand how it all works. I have a young teenage son and a toddler grandson. Need I say more! This book helped me to better understand that these are crucial times in brain development. It is also laid out how this can effect emotions and behaviors. It helped me to realize that I need a little more patience with my teenager and to stop and think about how his experiences, and those of my grandson, can determine which connections in the brain that are kept or gotten rid of.
