The Dancers of Sycamore Street

In 1955, fourteen-year-old Meredith can pinpoint the end of childhood: a famous choreographer arrives and upends her quiet life of high school and ballet in Middleton, Louisiana. His professional ballet world feels exotic and suspect in a town ruled by propriety. The Dancers of Sycamore Street vividly captures a bygone era and delivers a poignant, witty coming-of-age story.

Description

Sometimes, looking back at one’s life, one can recall the precise end of childhood. For Meredith, that time is 1955, when she is fourteen years old and her quiet, predictable life revolving around high school and ballet classes is upended by a visit from a famous choreographer. In Middleton, a medium-sized city in north Louisiana, his great world of professional ballet is viewed as remote, exotic and not quite respectable. Beautifully capturing a long-ago time and place where mothers were not supposed to work and propriety ruled, The Dancers of Sycamore Street is a poignant, witty and engaging story of a young girl’s coming of age.

Julie L’Enfant writes with vivid and poetic imagery describing a year in a young, aspiring ballet dancer’s life. Meredith has been “smitten by the dance muse” and trains unremittingly at the LeBreton School of Ballet, in Middleton, a provincial city in northern Louisiana. Mme LeBreton, a former professional dancer has the proper pedigree, tireless wisdom, and maintains close personal contacts with the dance scene in New York City. The story opens when Mr. Render, Mme LeBreton’s former dancing partner, arrives prepared to stage an original ballet for the community.

I loved reading this book. It is a beautiful coming of age story set in a small town in Louisiana. Meredith is in love with ballet and is excited to perform in a show created just for the dancers in her studio. I enjoyed the behind-the-scenes looks into practice, studio drama, performance and small-town life.

Beautifully told from the main character’s perspective with humor and eloquence as she strives to pursue her love of ballet and find her place in the world. I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

Julie L’Enfant’s book, The Dancers of Sycamore Street, is a wonderful escape back to a time we like to think of as simpler, easier. I became captivated by the characters in Middleton, La, and most especially the dancers at Mme LeBreton’s ballet school on Sycamore Street. Ms. L’Enfant writes beautifully, humorously, and so clearly captures the essence of this wonderful world. I hated to see it end.

The Dancers of Sycamore Street is an inspiring story about a young teenager coming of age in a charming southern town during the 1950s. Meredith, a high-school freshman and an avid student of ballet, is an observer of the adults around her. Sometimes their actions shock her. Sometimes she makes assumptions and later finds out they’re not true. Very entertaining! This book is for all age groups.
