How do you really know another person especially someone with whom you have limited contact? I have known JK Cheema since 1975 when we were both graduate students in the same program. Our contact was sporadic after finishing our degrees until it picked up a bit when I began visiting Madison, Wisconsin with some regularity. Yet upon reading Black Attaché I was struck by the realization that there was so much I didn’t know about Cheema.

I loved the structure Cheema used ~ including short stories that focus on events in her life, and that capture the thoughts and emotions that emanate from them. Reading this book gave me a deep and rich picture of an extraordinary life lived in various communities around the world! As well, it consistently offered honest reflections on the important ties of family, and the way that other people, as well as individual choices, have shaped the life of the author. I am quite in awe of Cheema’s world experiences, and the wisdom she has gleaned from them!

This book is a wonderfully written collection of stories. From dramatic historical events as seen by a young child to family dynamics while growing up, and the legacy they continue to have. From the exciting oversea work experiences to personal and very intimate details that have shaped the writer’s life. It’s a human story of compassion and reflection that many people can relate to.

Compelling stories from the life of a career diplomat and public health specialist, conveyed in a conversational style. Ralph H., verified review on Amazon The simple kindnesses shared between people of different cultures gives me hope for humanity. A shared meal or compassion for strangers are the gifts that Cheema writes about and reflects on in her calm, honest voice.
