Copy Desk Murders

Amid 1984 farm foreclosures and protests in southern Minnesota, newspaperman Boston Meade finds his summer intern dead in a ravine. Boston suspects murder tied to a missing piece of evidence and the bones of a Minneapolis detective discovered at a derelict farm. Local leaders shut him down—including his brother, the county sheriff—so Boston pursues the intern’s investigation with only editor Ginger O’Meara, whose trust is fragile. Their hunt exposes a town-wide criminal web and old betrayals.

A strong start to a new mystery series with a fine sense of place.

Description

Farm foreclosures and protests rock southern Minnesota in 1984 when newspaperman Boston Meade learns his summer intern lies dead in a ravine. He believes the intern was murdered to protect whoever killed the Minneapolis detective whose bones he found at a derelict farmhouse. But key evidence is missing. The town’s leaders were hostile to the research, including Boston’s brother, the Alton County sheriff. When he dismisses the detective’s death as a motive, Boston takes up the intern’s research. He works alone except for Ginger O’Meara, the editor he just hired, but her memories of his old betrayals make her loyalty tenuous. Chasing a killer, they uncover a criminal web that touches everyone in town. And while they are running for their lives, they are compelled to face the betrayals that separated them.

From the calm landscape and ordinary lives of Southern Minnesotans comes this surprising mystery thriller. With every page you read, the book becomes more of a page-turner.

—Jim Heynen, author of The One-room Schoolhouse

Newell Searle knows his roots. His descriptions of the southeastern Minnesota landscape and of a small farming community with its inhabitants (virtually all potentially guilty of murder) is spot on. The mystery itself is a good one, taking unexpected turns, creating doubt and false leads, and weaving in and out of several compelling subplots.

I enjoyed immersing myself in both the Audible version and the paperback of Copy Desk Murders by Newell Searle. As I followed along with the Audible narration, holding the paperback in my hands, I found myself captivated by the engaging narrative that resonates with anyone familiar with southern Minnesota. Since I had grandparents who lived in that area, the authenticity of the setting and the depiction of the times (1980s farm crisis) struck a chord with me. Searle skillfully captures the essence of rural southern Minnesota, painting a vivid picture of the landscape and the era.

The setting is rural Minnesota, but the twists, turns and action wouldn’t be out of place in a hard-boiled detective story. A great read for fans of Raymond Chandler, Dashiell Hammett, and other classic crime writers.
