Description

Everyone deals with fear, some of it real, some of it imagined. Fourteen-year-old Donny Hansen is trying to keep it from ruling, and ruining, his life. But then, he has reason to be afraid. The town bully, Swade Percival, has it out for Donny and his three best friends. The guys can’t seem to go anywhere during the summer of 1978 without running into Swade and his hulking sidekick, Avery Burke. Written in the same vein as Netflix’s Stranger Things and Stephen King’s The Body, The Graveyard Gang is a nostalgic journey combining the bonding and playful interaction of teen-age boys with a mystery that only they can solve. It’s a story of kid vs. adults, kids vs. kids and life vs. death.

This is just a fun read. For those of you who are old enough to have been teenagers (especially if you were a boy) in the 1970’s or remember what it was like, this is a fun read. The dialogue and thoughts ring true. The boys go on an adventure and solve a “crime”—just like many of us would want to do. The book keeps moving and before you know it you’re hooked.

The characters are vividly drawn and the action constant, which carries you quickly through this coming-of-age tale—one that readers of a similar vintage (such as me) can relate to. He takes me back to my own southern Minnesota youth with great locale descriptions and cultural touchstone references that easily awaken memories (I drank a lot of RC cola).

This book was terrific. It’s an immersive and engaging story told from the point of view of a 14-year-old boy in 1978, and a detailed portrait of life at that age and in that time. The characters are rich and interesting, and the story moves along at a good pace. I truly enjoyed the time I spent with this book.

Hauser veers away from his other two masterpieces, back to a time many of us remember and cherish. He captures the spirit and mind of mid-teenagers growing up in the Midwest. The twists and turns the gang takes are humorous, well written and bring back memories of the things we all did and the inner fears we dealt with at that age.

The Graveyard Gang delivers a page-turning tale about four teenaged boys, who will never forget the summer of 1978 in Davenport, Iowa. The reader is right there with them as they fall into one disastrous situation after another and narrowly escape, each time getting in deeper and deeper until it appears there is no way out.
