Life on a Hobby Farm

Author:

Dreaming of a cozy hobby farm? In Minnesota, it’s less idyll than endurance test: feeding livestock in twenty-below blizzards, sweating through 90-degree, swampy summers, and shoveling seemingly endless manure—because the animals never take a day off. With sharp humor and hard-earned honesty, this book reveals what ‘living off the land’ really costs. You’ll laugh, maybe wince, and keep asking, ‘What in the heck was she thinking?’

Description

Living on a hobby farm—the idea seems idyllic, doesn’t it? Yeah, you betcha’…not when you have to slog out to feed the livestock in twenty-below-zero weather, with a raging blizzard and 30 mile-an-hour winds. When you live in the frozen tundra otherwise known as Minnesota, that kind of thing tends to happen.

Or consider the delights of a Minnesota summer—when the temperature hovers above 90 degrees and the humidity is 10,000 percent. The animals still need to be tended, and the copious quantities of manure disposed of. Yup. It’s all fun and games. At least until the manure piles up.

If you’ve ever dreamed of having your own hobby farm, living off the land, and communing with nature—this book will open your eyes to what it’s really like. You’ll laugh, you will probably cry a little, and you’ll scratch your head and wonder, ‘What in the heck was she thinking?’

Loved this book! All of the chapters are entertaining, fun & very easy reading! I can feel the love she has for her four legged & winged friends.

I loved reading this book cover to cover. As someone who also lives out in the country, trying to figure out how to co-exist with cats, dogs, chickens, squirrels, wild turkeys and all the other critters and creatures, I could totally relate to the daily chaos and wacky troubleshooting that one goes through to make it all work. Looking forward to reading the other books in the “Amuck” series. This book is a great gift for anyone dreaming of living on a hobby farm.

I’m a city girl at heart, but this lovely book was an entertaining eye-opener for me. I’ve known Sue for a long time but had little idea of the challenges she’s faced on the hobby farm. It’s actually a page-turner since you want to know what happens next to Donald, Felix, Breezy and all the other adorable critters on whom she bestows loving care. I recommend you go back to the first two books to round out your ‘country’ education.

Sue Stein takes you along for the ride as she tends her hobby farm. Whether it’s the taunting coyote after the chickens or listening to the squirrels frolic in the attic, the reader shares the emotions, frustrations, exhaustion, and the joy this life brings. Simply Amuck is an easy read as you wonder what else will happen to this crazy, but endearing, middle-aged woman.
