From Primates to Politicians

A journey from the political side of animals to the animal side of politicians

From Primates to Politicians traces politics to its atavistic roots in human evolution, explaining how survival instincts, status competition, and resource struggle shape modern behavior. Juan Manuel Muñoz examines politics as a marketplace dominated by economic elites and political marketing—an arena of distortion we’ve learned to tolerate. In three parts, he surveys primatology, evolution, and power relations; unpacks the evolution of societies and the foundations of conservatism and liberalism; and presents an “evolutionary theory of politics,” applying it to current events and global forecasts.

Description

From Primates to Politicians is a fascinating exploration of politicians and their atavistic origins, traced back to the animal side of the human species. Based on our evolution, the book explains the reason for many human behaviors and the often-deadly scramble for the resources we perceive as necessary for survival. Juan Manuel Muñoz explores the bowels of politics—a profession understood and dominated by economic power elites and the expert manipulators of political marketing, who assemble the mercurial puzzle of infinite distortions to which we have become habituated. The content is divided into three parts; in the first, the author reviews the concepts of primatology, evolution, and the power relations between living beings; in the second, the evolution of human societies and the foundations of conservatism and liberalism, are unpacked, which leads him to propose his “evolutionary theory of politics”. The book closes with the analysis of multiple current events and raises some predictions about the global political environment.

I really liked reading this book, as it shows scientific evidence on how observing the life in society of primates, one can extrapolate and predict human behavior in social, power and political situations. I really enjoyed the chapter, where the author describes how the brain of a republican and a democrat works based on observing the behavior of another type of society existing on the planet.

With this book, Juan Manuel Muñoz explores a vitally important dynamic of society. Munoz reminds us that humans are primates, biological organisms whose physiology and behavior patterns are shaped by evolution and the need to survive in a biological world. As such, we are wired to respond to hierarchy and power dynamics in relationships with others of our species – our relationships determine our ability to access the resources we need to survive. Politicians, like other primates, use their power in overt and subtle ways.

—David Walter, author of A Sapien's Conundrum

A very entertaining book that will take you into the world of science and the interaction of the natural sciences with the political science, although trying to explain the often-aberrant social phenomena of human behavior that may have an explanation in the natural sciences. It is also in its English version. Wishing him successes and waiting for the publication of his second book. Highly recommended.
